UsingGarmin
From Mapwiki
On this page I'm going to attempt to help out the rest of the bike community with the use of their GPS units. Specifically the Garmin 705 which most of us biking guys have.
I'll be relying on your feedback to help me update this page with the information needed so that everyone can use their devices and my maps to their fullest potential.
I'll be revisiting this and adding screenshots of my computer and of my Garmin to aid, it's way too nice out today for me to do that right now.
I'm going to start off with loading up my Wawayanda map which I used for the first race of 2009, I'll detail later on how to create one of these maps and hopefully some of the Southern NJ riders can help update my .gpx database with the parks I've not even been to yet.
First, download my spaghetti map. I wish I could think of a word to call this, but the GPS community has seriously claimed every word in the dictionary related to maps for the 7 gazillion file types or map types they already have. My spaghetti map is the "base" map for the park. (But don't call it a "base map", that term is already in use for something else!)
That .gpx file is here under the map:
Save that file to your desktop, or directly where it needs to go in the Garmin. Hook up your garmin to your computer and browse to the device, it's labeled GARMIN in My Computer (Sorry mac people, I have no idea how your computers work). Inside the Garmin there is a folder named Garmin, open that. Inside that there is a folder called GPX. You want to put my file inside that GPX folder. DONE. Seriously.
Now unplug your Garmin and turn it on and go to:
Where to - Saved Rides
You'll see your new files that were added by the .GPX file that I gave you. GPX files can be used as a "container" for tracks, you can actually put 2 tracks in one .gpx file for organization sake, but they appear in your garmin as 2 files.
Click on "WawayandaComplete" and a pop up window appears and click on "Map Setup". In this window you can select what color you want this trail to show up as. For the spaghetti map I pick a dull color like green usually. Then click on the box that says "Show On Map". Next click the "Map" button and you'll see the map now appear on your screen in the color you selected! Click the left Garmin button and you return to that screen and go ahead and click the "OK" button. If for whatever reason your Garmin starts to navigate you to that trail, hit the Garmin Menu button and hit "Stop Navigation". This won't turn off the map, just the navigation. Now go back to the Saved Rides directory and do the same procedure for the 09 race loop. This Wawayanda map needs both files turned on to have the complete map shown on your device. When I created the map I drew out the race loop, and added the misc trails separately. In hindsight I should have drawn the ENTIRE map in the misc track, and added the race loop again on top of it.
Please leave comments with any questions and I will do my best to address them and update this post as I can with further detail and with more maps.
