2009 Kittatinny

Wow, what a difference my new camera is making. It actually functions as it should! I got some incredible shots, really happy so far.

And again, Team No Tights take’s top place on the podium for Cat2 Men’s 30-35. Go Utah! He also claimed 1st place for the NJ State Championship.

New Camera

After close to 40,000 pictures and battling the elements during both mountain bike races and rally car races, my Nikon D80 camera has finally had it. It still works but gets quirky sometimes and the focusing mechanism of the d80 isn’t up to speed with the more advanced lenses I have been using. As a result I’ve been ruining pictures more and more often. I got my replacement this week, a Nikon D700. Being full frame my current lenses aren’t exactly fully compatible with this camera body. If I use my normal lens (18-200VR) the camera only shoots in 5 megapixel mode. Which is fine, but isn’t exactly using my new camera to it’s fullest. Hopefully I will be obtaining full frame FX lenses soon. I did pick up a fixed 50mmf/2.8 which works great but can only zoom as fast as I can run :)

I’m trying to obtain a 70-200f/2.8 for the bike races, but I also need a general walking about lens, generally the FX lenses are very professional and are metal, and FULL of glass. They are very large and very heavy. Hopefully I can find something for everyday shooting like my 18-200 but in full frame.  There are a few choices, so I’ll have to play with some and figure out what I need. I’ll update when I get the new hardware.

Here’s my new camera and temporary lens, see you at Kittatinny!:

were you wearing a MTBNJ jersey? Your complimentary pictures are here:

A lot of these pictures need color/contrast/brightness touching up. If you are purchasing a print I will adjust it before it is printed. I do not get the chance if you purchase a digital download. If you would like me to touch up your photo send me an email at gtluke@gtluke.com and I’ll try my best to get your picture looking great. It would be too time consuming to do them all 1,000 pictures before anyone orders them so I’ll do them as they are purchased.

2009 Rally New York RallySprints

Not a terrific amount to write up about this event. It was supposed to be a 6 stage rally, consisting of 6 passes on the same road with a service after stage 3. Due to a wreck on stage 1, the event was cancelled. I managed to get a few decent shots of the first half of the field on the first stage but that was about it. The event organizer Ivan was entered in the race and I was excited to be able to give him a small something (my pictures) for all his hard work. Unfortunately he was behind the wreck and I never got a chance to see him.

All the pictures from the cars that made it past me are here: http://gtluke.smugmug.com/gallery/8627295_D3P3Z

Everyone at the event was very nice and the situation was handled flawlessly (besides the stuck fire truck).

We did manage to grab pizza at a local pizza place and it was actually really good pizza, and we were many many miles away from New York City :)
